Web radio is toast

terribly early in the morning

...Web radio is toast – The INQUIRER: “Soon the only place where Internet radio will survive is on illegal sites in foreign parts where governments are brave enough to ignore the Recording Company mafiaa. Still with the US government on both sides of the house taking bribes from the entertainment business in election year, we can guarantee that such nations will be dubbed terrorists and troops sent in any day now….”

10.5: Two-way synch Google Calendars and iCal

in the early morning

10.5: Two-way synch Google Calendars and iCal: “As noted in this post on the Google Code Blog, the Google Calendar now features support for the CalDV protocol:

The Calendar team was the first to launch its Google Data API back in 2006, and in that proud tradition, we’re excited to offer an additional way for developers to read from, and write to Google Calendar: the CalDAV protocol. (CalDAV—an extension of WebDAV—is an evolving, open standard for calendar synchronization.)

What this means is that you can now do two-way synchronization between Google Calendars and iCal version 3.x (standard in Leopard). G…

Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 Jailbreaks iPhone 2.0.1 Software [Featured Mac Download]

in the early evening

Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 Jailbreaks iPhone 2.0.1 Software [Featured Mac Download]: “

Mac only: The iPhone 2.0 jailbreak utility for Mac, PwnageTool, has just been updated to accommodate the latest iPhone software update from Apple. Re-jailbreak your iPhone 3G, first gen iPhone, or iPod touch running the 2.0.1 software with PwnageTool 2.0.2. PwnageTool creates an alternate firmware bundle to install on your device, that includes an app called Cydia—and new to this version of PwnageTool—a new beta of Installer.app. Those two apps serve as gateways to software repositories you’re not going to see in iTunes’ App Store. Here’s a screenshot of just a few apps I installed via Cydia and the Installer.app post-jailbreak.

IMG_0024.PNG

On the top left you see Installer and Cydia, then gTxtEdit (a better text editor than Notes), ModPlayer (plays more file formats than your iPod), SynchStep (plays songs with beats that synch to how fast you’re walking—seriously), MxTube (a YouTube clip downloader), and the NES emulator.

If you install OpenSSH from Cydia, you can also copy media and voicemail from it to your computer and tether your iPhone to your Mac to get online anywhere.

Here’s the step-by-step for jailbreaking your device with PwnageTool; developers recommend upgrading via the original PwnageTool’s built-in update system. PwnageTool 2.0.2 is a free download for Mac only.

Use OpenStep’s Ni.snd in OS X

in the late evening

Use OpenStep’s Ni.snd in OS X: “I had OpenStep running in a virtual machine for quite a long time before I got the idea to extract and convert the Ni.snd to something that OS X can play back.

For those who don’t know: OpenStep had many of the same system sounds found in today’s OS X. However, OS X lacks the most important one from OpenStep—it’s the ‘Ni’ sound from Monty Python’s Knights who say Ni. This hint presupposes that you have access to an OpenStep installation, as I don’t know if the sound was included with NextStep.

  1. In OpenStep, find the sound file, which is located at /NextLibrary/Sounds/Ni.snd
  2. Somehow, move the file over to your Mac. Since I use a virtual machine, I first tried to use NFS for that, but failed miserably. So I installed OmniWeb 3 and mailed the sound file to myself. Astonishing that the webmail site (GMX) even worked in the old browser, but it did …

Disable backups to speed iPhone/iPod touch syncing

in the wee hours

Disable backups to speed iPhone/iPod touch syncing: “I have several (more than 30) applications installed in my iPhone 2.0 (some of them are over 10MB). I’ve been a bit disappointed with the oh-so-slow syncs in iTunes due to the required backup process. Searching a bit, I found that I could disable the backups by setting a hidden iTunes preference. Quit iTunes, open Terminal, and enter this command:

defaults write com.apple.itunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool YES

Whe you next sync, your iPhone won’t be backed up, so the actual sync will go quickly. If you feel the need to back up your data again at some point, simply change YES to NO and sync your device (quit iTunes before changing the setting). After the backup is done, you can then disable backups again. If you want to restore a previous backup, you must set this value to NO before trying the restore.

[robg adds: The long backup times with iPhone 2.0 software are a real pain—while sometimes they seem speedy, my …
